At 5,895 m, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the world's tallest free-standing mountain. No technical climbing is needed to reach Uhuru Peak. With good preparation, a sensible pace and an experienced crew, it is within reach of most fit walkers.

We offer two classic routes. The Machame route (the "Whiskey" route) is scenic and varied, with camping all the way and good acclimatisation through the Barranco Valley. The Marangu route is the only route with hut accommodation. Both climbs start and end in Moshi, with airport transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing: frequently asked questions

How hard is it to climb Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek rather than a technical climb. The main challenge is altitude, which is why our itineraries include acclimatisation time and a slow, steady pace. Good fitness and the right gear make a big difference.

Machame or Marangu: which route should I choose?

Choose Machame for scenery and better acclimatisation if you are happy camping. Choose Marangu if you prefer sleeping in huts on a more direct route.

What is included in a Kilimanjaro climb?

Our climbs include park, camping and rescue fees, a qualified guide with assistant guides, porters and a cook, all meals on the mountain, camping equipment and hotel nights before and after the climb. Tips, flights, visas and personal gear are not included. See each itinerary for the full list.

How much should I tip the Kilimanjaro crew?

Tips are customary and not included in the price. Across the whole crew they typically total about US$230–300 per hiker, depending on route, number of days and group size.
